A stunning Ex Lats performance last year saw them run out 5-2 victors in the 3rd annual Ex Mancs vs Ex Lats Cup. The Lats put the disappointment of defeat in the inaugural fixture behind them to win the next two installments to lead the series 2-1. For the upcoming 4th fixture the Mancs were desperate to prevent a 3-1 series defeat and the prospect of having to wait until their 30's to lead the series once more.
The Lats were without influential midfielder Matt Winter and his exit to Australia meant that Owen Findlay was called up for his first cap while the fit again Tom Cullum replaced Oscar Simey who was unavailable in Sweden. The Mancs lost two big players as Ash Nicholls also departed for Australia while Nick Milne was exiled to South America. In to the side returned Gazz Jones and Leo Todd.
The Lats started the match in their trademark style, putting the Mancs under pressure from minute one and took an early lead for the third fixture in a row as Jack Scott headed in Scott Mohan's corner at the near-post. Minutes later another Mohan corner from the same side was headed against the underside of the bar from Q-W . The ball bounced on the line and was hacked away to safety, it proved a pivotal moment.
With Lats seemingly in control of the game, Joe Thorne was hauled down by Jack Scott from a corner and referee Colin Jarvis pointed to the spot. There were mixed appeals from the Lats but the referee was certain. Galvin calmly slotted the penalty to level the scores at 1-1.
A goal a piece was how it stayed at half time. The match was a more cagey affair than previous years with few chances being created as both defences were on top. It was the Ex Lats who found the next break-through though as Tom Mikkelsen steered a low shot into the corner for 2-1. Never one to power the ball in but Mikkelsen found enough accuracy to beat Morehen in the Mancs goal.
Rather than fly forward for more goals as in previous years, the Lats looked to hold on to the lead but were undone from another corner. This time there was no infringement but no marking either as Ed Galvin had the freedom of the penalty area to head home at the same near post that Jack Scott found in the first half. The Lats looked at one another dumbfounded as to how Galvin was allowed such space.
2-2 was how it stayed and so the fixture was decided on penalties for the first ever time. Galvin scored for Mancs and then Q-W's poor penalty was easily saved by Morehen. Ponsford smashed his penalty home and then Morehen produced another save to deny Aked to put the Mancs 2-0 up after 2 penalties each. Laryea brought the Lats back in it by saving Iffy Ahmad's penalty but then Mohan fired wide for the Lats. Thorne had the chances to win it for the Mancs but blazed over. It mattered not though as Holmes also missed the target to hand the Mancs the win, 0-2 on penalties to square the series at 2-2.
