The 6th installment of the Ex Lats vs Ex Mancs cup was indeed one to remember as for the first time ever, the match took place at the home of Queens Park Rangers, Loftus Road. Naturally, both sides were desperate to make the most of the occasion and as always, the match was a hard fought affair. The Ex Lats produced the better quality on the day though, to claim a 2-0 win and to level the series at 3-3.
The Ex Mancs had numerous absentees for the 2017 edition with captain Ed Galvin having to draft in two debutants in Dan Nurse and Ed Amoroso, the eligibility of the latter has since come into question. The Ex Lats again boasted a strong squad and welcomed back Matt Winter from his time away in Australia to cover the losses of Jack Dearden, Mo Taguri and Oscar Simey.
For the 2017 edition of the cup, Loftus Road was once again secured as the venue so both teams were keen to make the most of a rare opportunity to play on a professional ground. A record number of fans were in attendance and the game was filmed once again, though footage of the game has since mysteriously vanished.
The match was possibly the tightest one to date with few clear chances created by either side. The Ex Mancs were having the better of the game and duly took the lead as Greg Worley found himself free at the back post to collect and finish fiercely from a deep cross. The Ex Lats were struggling to find a way back into the game and need either a moment of inspiration or a stroke of luck. They got the latter as Ex Mancs defender Freddie Kirchner somehow managed to defy the laws of physics as his sliced volleyed clearance from a corner lobbed over his own keeper and into the back of the net.
The sides headed into the break level at 1-1 and though both tried to find the winning goal in the second period, the half was marred by a spate of injuries. No goals were added and with the game tied at the end of 90 minutes, a penalty shootout was required to separate the sides for the second time in the fixture's history.
The Ex Mancs had won the first ever shootout in 2014 by a score of 2-0 as 6 of the eight takers missed, including all 4 Ex Lats. Captain Ed Galvin took the first for the Ex Lats but saw his effort saved by Dan Laryea. James Snowdon scored the Ex Lats' first penalty before Joe Thorne & Scott Mohan made amends for their 2014 misses by converting their respective spot-kicks to make it 1-2. Greg Worley, Jamie Sprunt, James Gibbons, Matt Winter & Jon Bugeja all converted to allow Reuben Holmes the chance to aim for victory with the final penalty with the score tied at 4-4. He banished the memory of his 2014 miss, which handed the Ex Mancs the cup on that day, to duly convert and win the 2018 trophy for the Ex Lats and take the series lead once again at 4-3.
