After back-to-back wins at Loftus Road for the Lats, the Mancs triumphed in the less glamourous setting of Wormwood Scrubs to level the series at 4-4. This was the third occasion in which a side had been denied a hat-trick of titles. The Mancs had last lead the series in 2015 and were desperate not to let the Lats move ahead once again.
The difficult conditions at Wormwood Scrubs were all forgotten this year as both teams were bathed in sunshine at the Wimbledon Commons Extensions. A far cry still from Loftus Road but the pitch was good enough to allow both teams to play. There was big team news on both sides as the Lats were rejuvenated by the returns of Marshall, Aked and Sprunt, while the Mancs welcomed back Nicholls after a 6 year absence.
Both teams started with high intensity with the Lats having a point to prove from last year and the Mancs looking to continue their strong momentum. It was the Mancs though, that took the lead as Galvin looped a header into the top corner from Jones' free kick. Both teams were looking lively however and the Lats were given a perfect chance to respond as a penalty was awarded for handball. Q-W stepped up but saw his spot kicked saved. However, the referee awarded a retake for encroachment and he made no mistake at the second time of asking.
The teams went into the break level at 1-1 at half-time but the Mancs were feeling a strong sense of injustice. Rather than spur them on in the second half, it seemed to negatively affect their performance. The Lats soon took the lead as Q-W raced clear and calmly finished for 2-1. More goals quickly followed as the Mancs suffered a second half collapse. Q-W came close to the hat-trick but saw an effort denied by the Mancs GK, only for Findlay to slot home the rebound. The hat-trick soon followed though as again Q-W beat the offside trap to run through and score.
The final whistle couldn't come quick enough for the Mancs as the Lats ran out comfortable winners at 4-1. The Mancs still reeling from the first half penalty award, pointed to that moment as the turning point. Nevertheless, the Lats were now 5-4 up in the series heading into the 10th anniversary edition.
